My Words to Future 499 Students

Hello, are you enjoying this so far, or are you thinking of how to improve it?

This page is actually reserved for you for the purpose of helping you by letting you know what I had been through in accomplishing this task. Putting these Hey Cards on the net requires a lot of patience which I assume you have already obtained from the experience of taking Dr. James' class before. Continuing this task can help you in mastering in having more patience and be a more loving person.

The tasks include spending hours and hours in the lab scanning Hey Cards, cropping each card, remaining creative and loving after all these long hours of scanning and cropping, interpreting each Hey Card and creating a page for each Hey Card, or you can put several Hey Cards on one page, make a home page, a page of contents such as the page of list of Hey Cards, and then link to Dr. James' home page and other relative links in each page like this. Of course you then upload everything to your account to check your work. Next is to check for errors and make corrections and improvement. Upload it again and double check. I suppose you know all this checking and loading, so I am not going into details. Now let me tell you what I did and what problems I bumped into in each step.

  • Scanning:

Adobe Photoshop version 3.0 is the one I used. First lay out as many Hey Cards as you can in the scanner, because this will save you time than scanning it one by one. Click "OneScan 1.1.1" in "Aquire" under "File". Then a window shows up, you can choose scan area and sacn parameters. I will usually ignore the scan area, and choose "75 dpi" to use less disk space. If you choose "color", you will use more disk space. Then click "Scan". You can crop each card out later or crop each Hey Card and save it individually. See Cropping the Hey Cards for insruction. Save it as "gif" or "jpg".

  • Cropping the Hey Cards:

I used Adobe Photoshop version 3.0 for cropping and changing different colors to each Hey Card. Open each file of your saved Hey Cards and use the first left tool in the tool box on the left of the page. Click on that tool and move the cursor to where you want to start cropping. Click and drag the cursor from the chosen point to where you want to stop. The area inside the dotted box is the cropped picture. You can click again to undo the cropped area, if you're not satisfied with it. Then click on "Copy" under "Edit", go to "New" under "File" to open a new page, and then click on "Paste" under "Edit" to paste the cropped picture on. To the change of color, you can go under "Mode" or "Image". But window will pop up after clicking "Copy", in here, you can chose the color and image size. If you want to change the direction of the image, you can go to "Flip" or "Rotate" under "Image". You can change the color before cropping or after cropping, but don't forget to save it afterward.

  • Remaining Creative and Loving:

Don't let your tireness and impatience over-rule you!! I got exhausted mentally and physically after all these scanning and cropping, but I still got to interpret them and make nice pages to place them on the net. If you are doing all these within a day or two, or you just got done with cropping or scanning, and are planning to continue, you will definitely need to take a walk to the outside or to the restroom for a face wash. Or take a look at the nature around UH to relax your eyes and mind. Because after hours working in a closed space and before a screen, your mind probably is in quite an inactive state, and your eyes are tired if not crossed (looking at the screen for so long and so close). What about your back and shoulders? Leave your chair and go for a short walk.

  • Interpreting:

There is a technique to intrepret these Hey Cards. Don't look at them for too long and don't do deep thinking! Just read it and write down the first thing or idea that pops up in your mind. That's your interpretion! You got it already!

  • Creating Pages:

I didn't have much problem in creating pages. The main concern is to set the appropriate size for each Hey Card. Make sure it's not too big; 3" x 5" is a good size. Also you need to decide where to put your interpretion, such as below the card or next to it. Just be creative in making the pages interesting and easy-to-look-at for the visitors. Then just make appropriate links to relative sites. Make corrections until you are satisfied with your work. Then what is left? To UPLOAD!
