A #4: My Standardized Imaginings
A. INTERIOR DIALOGUE
(i) Overlays of Comments to Self
"After I was through with the exam and just when I
handed in my paper, I knew that I shouldn't have changed my answer to one of the
questions. Inside of me I could feel a sense of frustration and anger at myself because I
wanted to do especially well on this exam. I keep on thinking to myself why I had changed
the answer but after I read the question over my views started switching. It's good to
review your answers but sometimes when you read it over you begin to feel doubtful, just
like how I felt."
(ii) Value Expressions
"I am sitting down on the dining table waiting for
dinner. I notice that we are having liver for dinner and inside of me I can hear my
stomach saying, "no!" I make a funny look on my face and I can hear my mother
saying that it's good for me. I think to myself how awful it will taste and wished that I
didn't have to eat it."
(iii) Preparing Schedules
- "As I am driving home in this afternoon traffic I am
thinking of what I have to do when I go home and what needs to be done first. I decide
that I must cook dinner first, then clean-up the dishes, then take a bath, and then do
some studying. I am thinking to myself that I wish I could skip all of this and just go
home and relax."
(iv)
Reviewing/Making Plans and Lists
- "I am sitting in my bedroom trying to decide on what
I'll be wearing and the things that I'll have to be doing on the day of my brother's
wedding, As I think about that day I begin to feel more and more excited about the whole
event. I can picture how beautiful the church will look and how happy everyone will be.
But, I can also feel a very busy day coming."
(v) Emotionalizing Episodes
- "Just this morning I had an upsetting conversation with
my brother. Everytime I think about it I begin to feel disappointed and hurt of what he
said to me. I wish it never happened because I can't help but think about it continuously.
This kind of feelings often stay with me for sometime until it gets cleared up.
(vi) Rehearsals and Practicings
- "Tomorrow afternoon I will be making a speech in front
of the whole class, so right now I am practicing for it. As I rehearse my lines I begin to
feel anxious and nervous about the whole thing. I begin to think about all the awful
things that could happen while I give the speech. Yuck! I wish that I wouldn't have to do
it."
(vii) Annotations,
Memorizings, Editings
- "I am trying to memorize a list of words and its
stressed accents. While I am doing this though, I feel it is a waste of time because I do
not especially stress words as I talk nor have I spoken to anyone who does this also.
However my teacher who thinks that local people needs this practlce expects us to say it
accordingly. I think to myself that it isn't very necessary as long as the word is
understood by the person I am saying it to."
(viii) Unmentionables Within the Relationship
- "I was having lunch with my girlfriend when all of a
sudden I smelled something awfully strong. I turned around to see where it was coming from
and I see my girlfriend's father smoking a cigar. He starts walking towards us and sits
right next to me. He starts talking to me and smokes that cigar towards my direction. I
wish I could tell him not to smoke near me because I can't stand the smell but I guess
this is just one of those things you don't mention, but tolerate. Shucks!"
A #4: My Standardized Imaginings
B. FEELING ARGUMENTS
- (i) Figuring out a Conflict
- "It's Saturday night and I just came home from work. My
boyfriend called and asked me if I wanted to go and see a movie. I want to go but, I
really think that I should stay home and study because next week I have three exams. Oh,
but I really wanted to see this movie and I'm not sure if it'll still be on next weekend. Should
I go to the movie or should I stay home and study for my exams? Ah, the movie will
probably go to another theater and I'll get a chance to see it then, I'd better be a good
kid and study."
(ii) Making
Resolutions
- "Well this year my resolution was to better myself by
being more patient with people and to learn to cope with the tough days that I have. I
must learn to consider it as a learning experience or even to know that life won't always
be as rough as that day."
A #4: My Standardized Imaginings
C. FANTASY/DAYDREAM EPISODES
(i) Elaborations of Dramatized Scenarios
- "I am watching the news and it is showing the White
House and the beauty of it all. A commercial comes on but I start to imagine myself as
living there. I see myself entertaining my friends for dinner on a table 8 ft. long. We
are eating and having an exciting time ringing the bell for more service. Then all of a
sudden the news comes back on and I have myself back into reality living in my own cozy
home without any maids or butlers."
(ii) Construction of Catharsis Stories
- "I am having a hard time understanding this entry. So
the only thing I could think about is my fear of dying. I am afraid of death and I often
find myself thinking about the sad things of it. But, then I thought to myself that I
shouldn't feel this way because I don't really know what it'll be like, who knows it may
be the most beautiful thing in life for me."
(iii) Re-contacting Nostalgic Memories
- "I am in my yard pulling weeds and I begin to think
about when I was a little girl. I used to gather some weeds, rocks, and soil mix it with
water and pretend that it was some kind of vegetable soup. Then I would make some mud
patties and sprinkle some of the leaves from the weeds on top of the patties, to pretend
that it was hamburgers. It's a wonder all the different dishes I use to make with weeds,
rocks, and soil. But, now the weeds are nothing but nusances."
(iv) Working out Alternative Realities
- "I am in class listening to a boring lecture. My mind,
however, is still at the party that I went to this past weekend. I had a nice time and I
wish we (my friends and I) could get together like that more often. I remembered a joke
that Paul told me and I start to smile about it in class. I'm in two worlds now. Part of
me is at a party and the other part of me is in class. The bell rings and I start to walk
out of class."

D. THE ELEVATED REGISTER
- (i) Praying/Invocations

- "I am practicing my hula and dancing to some really
mellow music. I find myself drifting into a relaxed state, free of tension. I feel
freedom....... "
(iii) Meditations/Readings
of Scriptures
- "I am sitting on the beach watching the waves gently
cover the shore and then return back into the vast ocean. My mind begins to float away
with the waves as I continue to watch the sea. All of my senses have seemed to disappear
for just a few moments but then I find myself back on the beach and back into
reality."
(iv) Poetic
Expressions
- "This poem was given to me from one of my girlfriends,
during a time when I was really down.
- "With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is
still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy."

because he was waiting on someone else."
- (b) from the NOSE of particular Others

- (2) involving your IDEAS (Memories, Attitudes,
Opinions)
- "Sandy and I started talking about the different

I was careful in what I said and slowly switched the subject."

A. NOTICING OBSERVATIONS
- (i) Visual Sightings
- (d) People in Public Places
- "While we (my boyfriend and I) were having a late snack
at this restaurant in Waikiki, I couldn't help but notice a guy sitting next to us. First,
he had his meal then after he was through he picked up the salt shaker and started
sprinkling salt into his mouth. I know that he wasn't playing around because his date that
he was with didn't react surprisingly nor did she laugh jokingly, Later I thought to
myself it may have been a custom or nature of his race."

- (b) Territoriality (hang outs, rights and privileges,
reputation, etc.)
- "Every Sunday I try to go down to the community
recreation center. The center is only open to the people of the community that we live so
it's good because it doesn't get jammed with a whole bunch of people. There are many
things to do, like: swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, sauna, exercise room and so
many more other things. I especially enjoy the pool because its big and I haven't ever
seen it packed with people. Above all it's a good place to go and relax."

B. DESCRIPTION OF TRANSACTIONS
- ( i) Gossiping
- "My girlfriend and I were talking about her brother,

correct himself. This bothers my girlfriend very much so she tells me about it."
- (ii) Catching up on News
- "I didn't see my boyfriend for about a week and then

like that."
- (iii) Having an Argument

himself could use."
- (iv) Joking

- "Michelle and I are planning to go away this summer but
there are so many things we have to do before we leave. So we are now listing all the

things to be done, it will make the trip more enjoyable knowing that everything should go
alright. We both are happy to be going on a vacation because it should be very
relaxing."
- (vii) Working out a Problem
- "I am having a party this coming weekend and I'm having
a difficult time deciding on who to invite. I'd like to invite everyone but because of
financial reasons I cannot. And I can't just invite some people because if the others find
out they may feel hurt. It's hard to decide but I know that I'll probably end up inviting
a few people and hope that the others will understand. Or else the others that I couldn't
invite could come after dinner and just have some drinks or something."
- (viii) Sharing Secrets/Confessions
- "Stacie had found out that one of our girlfriends were
getting married because she had to, because she was pregnant. This girlfriend of ours
didn't mention this occasion to anyone so I guess she wanted to keep it a secret maybe

Falls for our first time. It was so beautiful, with greenery filling the whole area. One

bought her a dozen red roses, knowing how much she loves flowers."
- (iii) Mentioning a Person to Someone

noticed my dentist walking towards my way but I didn't want to see him because every time

would like to go when I am ready. I try to avoid seeing him by turning my head to the side
and quickly walk pass him."
- (v) Going to See/Looking for a Person
- "I am driving to my boyfriend's house to have lunch
with him. It's a thirty minutes drive from my house to his. Although it may seem far it
isn't really once you get use to it."
- (vi) Having a Mental Exchange with Someone
- "I didn't see Amy for years and just the other day I
ran into her at the market. We stopped and chatted for a little while. I could feel that
there was this looking over and inner thinkings by both of us. This was probably due to
the reason that we hadn't seen each other in a long time and also because we both had
changed a great deal since high school days.
