A Written Record of a Dinner Conversation

Speakers: me, mom, dad, Mike (brother), Stacy (family friend), and dogs Lucky and Lady

Dinner is just beginning to start and everyone is seated at the table in the kitchen.


1. me: Okay, who wants rice?

2. Stacy: me

3. Mike: giggle's (because of tape)

4. Stacy: mmmm, too much

5. Mike: give me some
: giggle's------ too bad they couldn't see this (referring
to the person who's going to listen to tape )

6. Stacy: giggle's----the teacher would get hungry----giggle's

7. Stacy: taste good Joann, the food: even if I don't feel like eating

8. Mike: giggle's (at Stacys comment)

9. Mike: Stacy use your fork, no use your hand

10. Mike and Stacy laughs

11. Stacy: Oh you straining ah you (talking to Mike about the way he's eating)

12. Mike: we should do this more often, keep dad quiet----giggle's

13. mom: Lady want to eat too; Lady want to eat too

14. Stacy: giggle's (at Mike for his comment)

15. Mike: here, Stacy here (passing to her some spareribs)

16. Stacy: what you making? (asking mom while she is at the sink)

17. mom: Popeye (talking about the spinach she is making)

18. Mike: Popeye (making fun of the way mom says Popeye)

19. mom: Betta eat plenty yo, here spinach, spinach

20. moms good, good for health
: here (passing the spinach)

21. Stacy: Can I have the shoyu?

22. mom: Ya

23. Lady and Lucy barks

24. Stacy: I cannot eat the spareribs like that----- I no like this part
(showing the cartilage part)

25. mom: Why? That's the part the best

26. Stacy: rubber

27. mom: no mo cold rice

28. me: no


** Short pause while everyone continues eating**

29. me: you know the last time you went to cut your hair how much

did they charge you. (asking Stacy)

30. Stacy: twenty-four

31. me: Wow!

32: Stacy: because I bought the gel-aid (hair conditioner)

33: Mike: Oh

34. Stacy: so that's three dollars already

35. mom: every how often you go?

36. me: Ya, I go ask Sharon (the beautitioner) on Wednesday

37. Stacy: only when I get money (answering mom's question)

38. mom: that's too expensive, mo betta go different place

39. dad: sheee, I can cut eight times (referring to his hair)

40. Stacy: giggle's----really!

41. me: they just getting like how the other places are

(referring to the other beauty shops)

42. Mike: Where do you go? (asking dad)

43. Stacy: yours what two dollar half ya

44. me: ya! two dollar half

45. Stacy: how much is men?

46. mom: Sharon not going do for you (asking Stacy)

47. Stacy: she was

48. mom: and thennnnn that much

49. Stacy: oh ya

50. mom: whose, whose collect money

51. me: she doesn't give me discount, you know (referring to Sharon)

52. dad: ya

53. mom: but no need discount but, my

54. Stacy: Honolulu Federal,if you get (If one has an account with Honolulu

Federal then one will receive discount at the beauty shop)

55. Stacy: you get Honolulu Federal (asking me)

56. me: Ya, but I don't have the card----so I cannot get discount

57. mom: Why?? You can use my card

58. me: have to have a card of your own

59. mom: Huh... ya you can bring our card you are just like our da kine

dependent

60. Mike: or your passbook (same as bankbook)

61. me: No, still got to bring the card

62. Stacy: the blue card

63. mom: passcard only, ya

64. Mike: oh ya

65. dad: what you going do about your car? (asking Mike)

66. mom: ten percent (still referring to discount received if use passcard at

Honolulu Federal)

67. me: why something wrong (referring to dad's question)

68. dad: safety sticker

69. mom: you no mo safety sticker, you never go today (asking Mike)

70. me: oh! you never pass (asking Mike)

71. mom: you get ticket you know : tomorrow you betta go

72. Stacy: your light and your brake? (asking Mike)

73. mom: tomorrow one more day have, mh (till the end of the month)

74. Mike: Ya tomorrow I going

75. dad: you want me to take um over there (At his own service station)

76. Mike: got to fix some stuff

77. me: take em Sears (telling Mike)

78. dad: nnnnnnn...

79. me: discount

80. dad: giggle's-----discount....


**Short pause again**
and
**when conversation continues subject changes.**


81. mom: this is real good (the sparerib)

82. Mike: mmmmmm

83. mom: your mother made, you made (asking Stacy)

84. me: Stacy made

85. Stacy: No.----I bought em

86. mom: you bought em

87. Stacy: from the store we use to be at

88. mom: already soft like this

89 . Stacy: Yep!

: our secret recipe

90. me: ya!

91. Stacy: when the butcher died he gave em to us

92 . me: the recipe!

93. Stacy: But we sold em----we was going to make the recipe

: and just sell em to the store ah, .. ..

94. Mike: ummm

95. Stacy: ...but then we couldn't keep up

96. me: how much..... (couldn't finish question because was interrupted by Mike )

97. Mike: but you folks, your father still has the recipe ah,

still knows though ah

98. Stacy: he went, yup, he went sell em to them but,, the recipe

99. Mike: Ya, but he still has the record of it

100. me: Oh he sold it to them

101. Stacy: Before when had the other butcher when we use to own um

(referring to the store) they use to take em mainland and outer island
any kind you know all the order way ahead ah, Christmas like that

102. Mike: oh ya! ! !

103. Stacy: but now days guys they no make to much (talking about the spareribs)

104. mom: you know Ala Moana by the Wiki Wiki Coffee Shop, next to the

Wiki Wiki Coffee Shop every morning stay hanging ya, you know that .....

105. Stacy: ya, ya, ya

106. mom: look so good you know but we cannot buy you know because

every time door close. We drink coffee see in the morning

107. Stacy: ya!

108. Mike: That's, uh, one of the people that buy em, Wiki Wiki?

109. Stacy: no


This next section from line 110 to 112,there are two groups
talking. One group is my mother and me and the other group
is Mike and Stacy.

110. Mom: every Sunday Lorene and I say, "so good but cannot buy"

(Lorene is my mom's girlfriend)

111. Mike: they only sell at the store

112. Stacy: they only sell at the store but like you know the people in the valley

know about this like different people know and someone
would go mainland and they would take that kind up

113. me: oh you should have brought today

114. mom: cannot buy because close

115. me: no brought today when you went to work

116. dad: this real good (referring to spareribs stlll yet)


**Short pause**
and
**when conversation returns subject is changed**


117. mom: go eat spinach, ah!

118. Stacy: giggle's (at mom)

119. Stacy: Lance coming (Lance is my boyfriend)

120. me: after he feed Speed (Speed is Lance's dog)

121. Stacy: You know what Joann told me too, because I was going give

her one dollar for tip

122. me: who?

123. Stacy: Jo, Sharon, Sharon and I told Paulette no need give tip now you

know because she just like us come regular----but then she cannot
give me discount cause I no mo the card (referring back to the
Honolulu Federal passcard) but she said when I come don't scrimp-----
so I was thinking how can Iscrimp because the bill is already too high,
ah----she tell me don' t scrimp though when I come to buy
that kind stuff----that's kind of plenty for me.
(Paulette is Mike's wife and once again Sharon is the beautician)

124. me: uh

125. Stacy: because they try sell you everything

126. dad: don't what (asking Stacy what she meant when she said scrimp)

127. Stacy: don't scrimp

128. dad: scrimp

129. mom: what's that scrimp?

130. Stacy: Scrimp, you know don't watch your money too much kind like,

no be too tight in otherwords----that's what she said (she is Sharon)

131. mom: but, too expensive Stacy

132. Stacy: that's why you know I couldn't.... I was shocked already

133. mom: Stacy you go someplace

134. me: wait I go ask her, I going Wednesday (referring to Sharon)

135. me: I going tell her, if you going charge me that much forget it----giggling

136. Stacy: maybe she....I don't know

137. mom: and you folks tip um

138. me: ya

139. Stacy: she, she going tell you no need tip now

140. me: ya

141. Stacy: just come regular

142. Mike: you know why, their pay go up ah (the beautitions)

143. Stacy: oh ya!

144. mom: but still then, twenty-two dollars

145. Stacy: tip not on the side?----I mean their own

146. Mike: Ya that's on the side but I mean their pay goes up

so that's why the boss has to charge more, ah

147. Stacy: oh!

148. Mom: but twenty-two dollars that's too high

149. dad: how long take (referring to haircut)

150. me: one hour

151. dad: ONE HOUR!!!!

152. mom: just cut hair, you know

153. Stacy: wash

154. Mike: Joann, what you want to drink, water or milk?

(Mike stands up and walks to icebox)

155. me: water

156. me: but some other places is more expensive

(referring to beauty shop)

157. dad: forget it!!

158. Stacy: Ya, I wouldn't mind if was same price like them

(referring to Paulette and me) Yours and Paulette's and
mine different.....

159. me: ya

160. Stacy:.... that's where I don't know, you know where the difference come in

160. mom: Ya

161. dad: twenty-four dollar, one hour

162. Stacy: I was so shocked, I couldn't ask her what is this, how come so much

163. mom: first time this time, twenty-four dollars

164. Stacy: mmmmmmm

165. mom: everytime

166. Stacy: last time was little bit more but from long hair I went go cut

short that's why.

167. mom: oh!

168. Stacy: first time

169. me: Ya, but still then

170. dad: maybe she know you've got a lot of money

171. me: giggle

172. Stacy: I think I had "sucka" on my head

(referring to having the word sucker written across her forehead)

*** Pause little while***


173. Stacy: but I don't know how the conditioner can be $3.50

(still concerned over haircut)

174. me: that's too high

175. Mike: mmm

176. Stacy: if she was going put on my head and give me the tube, not too bad.

But she went only put on my head.

177. Mike: maybe we should ah send somebody school for learn and then they

do everybody one's

178. Stacy: Paulette said she like me send her go school she said, "I don't mind."

179. Mike: in the long run it'd be cheaper

180. Stacy: she can do everybody's shampoo and cut

181. me: she tells me to come to her house to cut my hair.

(referring to Sharon, the beautician)

182. Stacy: Sharon?

183. dad: who, Sharon?

184. mom: ya, because the she cheap, she can make

185. me: no, then she don't have to charge

186. Stacy: oh, I like go her house (giggle)

187. Mike: (giggle) ya

188. mom: why she got to charge little bit but my, the boss don't know ah

189. me: no she said she not going charge me. You know the boss he doesn't

know how to cut hair.

190. Mike: ya

l91. me: he doesn't have any experience at all.

192. Stacy: oh ya

193. me: he must be making a lot of money, ya

194. Stacy: ya

195. ma: busy over there? (referring to beauty shop)

196. Stacy: mm

197. me: ya, pretty busy

198. Mike: mm, ya

199. mom: what the beauty shop name? (asking Stacy)
